How (AI) Is Changing The Way We Work

🕯 Intro

🎆 Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be viewed as a tool that allows humans to augment their knowledge and thinking by using computers. The quality of the output is still greatly determined by the inputs, therefore, AI is an added layer of ability, allowing us to think more clearly and do more with our knowledge. In recent years we have seen new applications of AI solving problems from autonomous driving, to writing and image creation, which we’ll be reviewing in this post.

📜 Overview of AI Tool-sets

Although artificial intelligence (AI) is not a new concept in computer science or the world of technology, I did not realize until very recently that models trained to solve general-purpose problems that I face every day have become more precise and accurate, and now provide me with a service that could define the next phase of my professional career due to their effectiveness.

Using this post, I hope to provide readers with insight into text-to-image and AI writing, as well as links to free and paid tools that can be used right away to optimize your content creation process. Those of you who write on a daily basis in any capacity will find this post valuable.

⚗️ Text to Image AI - How Stable diffusion works and how I’m using text-to-image

🛸 The Stable-Diffusion model

“Stable Diffusion is a deep learning, text-to-image model released in 2022. It is primarily used to generate detailed images conditioned on text descriptions, though it can also be applied to other tasks such as inpainting, outpainting, and generating image-to-image translations guided by a text prompt.”

⛏ How does Stable-Diffusion work?

“Stable Diffusion is a latent diffusion model, a variety of deep generative neural networks developed by the CompVis group at LMU Munich. The model has been released by a collaboration of Stability AI, CompVis LMU, and Runway with support from EleutherAI and LAION. In October 2022, Stability AI raised $101 million USD in a round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Coatue Management”.

🔭 Text-to-image use case

With the help of AI-designed art, I’m now generating hero images for my blog posts. Not only are these images creative, but they’re also unique. I have developed a flow for creating new images that match my UI design language.

As the person who writes and develops my blog, I understand the design goals better than anyone else I might hire. As a result, my text-based ideas are achieving massively impressive results for the header section of my blog posts.

Use Stable Diffusion text-to-image for free

Over the last month, many companies have released paid versions of the Stable-diffusion model but if you would like to take the model for a test run, Checkout Dreamstudios’ public beta while it’s still free to use.

👾 📑 AI Writing

Secondly, let’s take a look at AI writing assistants in more detail, this is the tool that has made it possible for me to both write and self-edit my content and has completely defined my content creation process and strategy – Now I don’t have to rely on friends and family to proofread entire posts, I can rely on (AI) writing assistants to validate the quality of every word. They also enable me to remove idiolect from my writing, which allows me to focus on the content.

📝 How does AI Writing work

“We are at the start of a revolution in Natural Language Processing (NLP), or the ability of machines to understand and generate natural text. It’s no coincidence that language is a uniquely human ability, so making significant progress in NLP calls for considerable scientific and engineering innovations”. ~WordTune

(AI) writing tools optimize or generate written content based on prompts, or inputs, fed to models. After the model receives the instructions, it will return suggestions, content, copy, etc – From paragraphs to emails, these services can solve many writing pain points wherever a word processor is used, or through native user interfaces.

The goal of AI writing tools is to produce natural-sounding language that is as human-like as possible. To understand and produce text, it uses natural language processing (NLP) techniques, which allow the models to process and understand the instruction set fed to them.

The majority of AI Writing tools also use machine learning (ML) to learn from previous results and improve output results over time. The models are also enhanced with deep learning techniques to generate more intricate, or complex results by parsing past results and leveraging large-scale data sets to deliver the most accurate content, copy, and text.

It is important to note that the mechanics of these models vary from company to company, and service to service; this is a very high-level overview.

Some of the core use cases for AI Writing include:

  1. Email Editing
  2. Paragraph 1st drafts
  3. Grammatical Changes/ suggestions
  4. Query the internet for research purposes, the same way you would query the internet through a web browser (One of my personal favorite use cases)
  5. Spell Check
  6. Blog metadata generation
  7. Blog Intro generation
  8. Summarizer
  9. Identify patterns in large amounts of data and to identify insights
  10. Produce structured data such as tables and graphs, and generate reports based on the data

⚙️💡 List of AI Writing Tools - Review of my top 3 AI Writing tools available today

🔨 HyperWrite

Hyperwrite is enabled on my word processor of choice (Google Docs), before I convert content into markdown within VS code, Hyperwrite will suggest sentence completions from time to time which has helped with writer’s block. The output is far from shippable copy quality, but it’s excellent as a way to help generate fresh ideas and keep you writing. Some of the other features of their service include blog outline generation and long-form copy.

jasper.ai

Of all of the AI writing tools I have used thus far, this service seems to be targeting users that need to generate long-form copy or entire blog posts.

When writing about subjects that do not require any level of domain experience, this service is ideal, but simply can not compete with humans when it comes to creating research-based content, at the moment.

I personally believe they may be trying to do too many things with their service rather than focusing on their models performing one task exceptionally well, they focus on having their models do multiple things slightly well.

But overall, it’s another amazing tool that will solve pain points for marketers and content writing alike.

🏅 WordTune

In the immediate future, this is the only AI writing tool I plan on using - After I have determined a topic to write about, I conduct research - As part of this process, I create an unstructured master document that serves as my sole source of truth about the topic at hand.

The most effective way for me to ensure that I have done a thorough amount of research is to create a healthy amount of copy. All content for a post is written before I even use AI writing tools. Only then do I begin using artificial intelligence to self-edit and rephrase my 1st-draft.

🎇 Notion AI

When I opened ProductHunt, as I do every day, I saw that Notion’s private alpha for its AI writing assistant had been released, and users can now join the waitlist for the alpha cohort. This post was originally scheduled to publish on Wed, 11-16-2022 until I viewed thier release post.

This is a major milestone for the AI writing tools market, as it will be the first major player to release an AI-writing product that is bound to reach a massive audience.

Companies shipping AI Writing tools already target many of these customers, but acquiring and activating customers is not as easy as it seems, even when the product provides value to the customer – Users are not used to change, so influencing customers to add a new tool to their productivity toolbox is much more difficult than it may seem for companies and teams developing AI writing tools.

As of now, their service seems to be devoted to idea generation and the creation of first-draft paragraphs. Notion has been my scheduling and documentation partner for quite some time, and I look forward to trying out their service in the near future.

❓ Will AI replace writers?

Short answer, I don’t think so, or not entirely– Humans will continue to rely on this available technology only more and more as the technology becomes adopted by more enterprise organizations, institutions, governments, etc.

As more and more people become activated and use an AI writing assistant, the models’ predictive abilities will only increase over time, which is something I have noticed in the overall quality of the copy that is recommended by AI writing tools such as HyperWrite.

Again, I believe these tools are extensions not replacements, the quality of the content we consume will only become better, as a result, and writers, regardless of their domain, are not going anywhere. It must again be stressed that modeling creativity is extremely challenging, so the large language models that are taking the world by storm are being viewed as boilerplate copy, which requires human editing to reach high quality artistic content.

🔌 Free AI writing tools

Would you be interested in trying AI writing, but unwilling to spend the money upfront? You don’t have to worry; AI writing tools are offering limited-use free options as part of their customer acquisition strategies, so you’ll have a chance to test them out to determine if they meet your needs.

It would be my pleasure to push my team to adopt this technology if I owned a content-driven business since I truly believe these tools will open the door to writing for so many people who suffer from writer’s block and now have someone on hand to proofread and edit their work. As a result, time-to-market will decrease while delivering better, more optimized content.

As of now, both Wordtune and Hyperwrite have free-tier plans, either giving you a fixed daily amount of uses or a monthly limit - Full disclosure, I pay for WordTune, not Hyperwrite or Jasper - When Notion AI becomes available, I will definitely test its effectiveness in comparison to WordTune’s editing and rewriting capabilities.

  1. WordTune (Free Tier Available)
  2. HyperWrite (Free Tier Available)
  3. jasper.ai (Trial Available)

🌌 Conclusion

Artificial intelligence is an increasingly accessible technology with immense potential to solve some of the most complex challenges of our time. From bio-medical applications to transportation and mobility, AI is being used in a variety of sectors and industries to help humanity progress. As AI continues to evolve, it will be integral to the ongoing development of our species.

Anything that allows me to reduce the amount of time spent creating content, either written content or image assets, is something I will be considering as part of my workflow - I am a one-man team that develops, writes, and optimizes content, so these tools are very appealing. When I move back into a management-based role in the future and have a team working under me, I will definitely be evaluating some of these tools as a way to improve productivity and quality, from marketing outreach to social media.

In this post, we covered both AI Writing tools and text-to-image generative AI, two key areas of development for the consumer AI landscape in 2022, and beyond.

AI Ghostwriting and Complete Code tools recently released by Github and Repelit have prompted many people to ask: will AI write code? Short answer: Yes, but like AI writing tools, their effectiveness completely depends on their users’ preexisting knowledge and experience.
